Almost every second person is having one or more Retrograde planets in his horoscope and most of the people are interested to know as to what can a retrograde planet signify in their horoscope. Many theories and views have been given by different astrologers about retrograde planets. Due to these theories a number of misconceptions regarding the retrograde planets have taken birth and the common man interested in Astrology is still not able to understand as to what may be the meaning of a retrograde planet in his horoscope. Let’s try to look at some of the theories regarding retrograde planets and analyze them.

First of all there are some astrologers who believe and preach that if a planet is retrograde in a horoscope, it would mean that the planet is working negative for the native providing the logic that as the retrograde planet moves backward or in an opposite direction, so it is supposed to give negative or opposite results and the native having a retrograde planet in his horoscope must be careful with the negative results. A number of astrologers have modified this theory and they believe and preach that a retrograde planet will reverse its basic functional nature in a horoscope, which means that if the planet is supposed to work positively in a horoscope according to all other factors deciding the nature of a planet in a horoscope, it will work negatively if it becomes retrograde. And in the same way if a planet is supposed to work negatively in a horoscope according to all other factors deciding the nature of a planet in a horoscope, it will work positively if it becomes retrograde. To further filter this theory, there are some astrologers who believe that if a planet becomes retrograde in its sign of exaltation, it works negatively and if a planet becomes retrograde in its sign of debilitation, it works positively for the native. And then there are some astrologers who state that a retrograde planet is not at all different from a straight planet because there is no such concept as a retrograde planet in astrology. These astrologers believe and preach that the planets are only moving in a forward motion all the time and they never go retrograde in actual practice and so it is not necessary to pay any attention to a planet just because of the fact that it is showing retrograde in a horoscope. And there may be a couple of more theories about retrograde planets which may associate different results with them. But which one of the above mentioned theories holds good for predicting a retrograde planet. Let’s try to understand the concept and analyze the results given by retrograde planets.

A retrograde planet is never the same as a straight planet and it always indicates something different about the results given by the retrograde planet. But first thing to notice and remember is that in most of the cases, the retrograde planet does not mean a change in its functional nature for a native Which means that if a positive planet goes retrograde in a horoscope, it will still show positive results and if a negative planet goes retrograde in a horoscope, it will still show negative results. And also the placement of a retrograde planet in its sign of exaltation or debilitation does not make any difference in its functional nature and only changes the strength of this planet as already explained in my previous article named Exalted and Debilitated Planets. However there are some changes which a planet undergoes when it goes retrograde in a horoscope and these changes are usually regarding some of the characteristics of the retrograde planet and not the overall nature of the planet. So let’s try to understand the changes which are signified when different planets go retrograde.

Starting with Jupiter, a retrograde Jupiter never shows any major negativity on account of being retrograde if it is otherwise positive in a horoscope though it does show some results which are different. A retrograde Jupiter usually produces positive or negative results with a delay compared to a straight moving Jupiter. It also renders the habit of preaching more than usual in some cases and it may also be responsible for a situation where the native sometimes does not know how to deal with his knowledge properly. Such natives may have a habit of giving unasked advice to other people and may not know how to properly apply their knowledge at times.  Apart from these general deviations, a retrograde Jupiter works much the same as a straight moving Jupiter and gives positive or negative results regarding its other significances as indicated by the other factors in a horoscope.

A retrograde Mars in a horoscope usually signifies an excess of energy within the native and the native may not know what to do with this energy at times. So it can make the native aggressive and such natives may get angry comparatively sooner. A native with a retrograde Mars in his horoscope may take surprising decisions at times.  A retrograde Mars in case of females may show some masculine habits like the tendency to control and dominate. Apart from these general deviations, a retrograde Mars gives it results in a very much similar way as a straight moving Mars. But it is important to notice that a retrograde Mars possesses far more energy than a straight moving Mars and it is capable of producing results of higher quantums and intensities. So people with a negative retrograde Mars in their horoscope must be careful as it can cause much more damage than a straight moving Mars.

A retrograde Venus in a horoscope usually signifies changes on the emotional front. Men with a retrograde Venus in their horoscope are usually more sensitive and possessive towards their love relations and it is comparatively difficult for them to let go of a girlfriend or a lover. Such men take a long time to recover from a setback in their love life. If the other factors are good in their horoscope, the men with a retrograde Venus can prove to be more devoted lovers provided their partners can deal with their habit of being possessive and sensitive. A retrograde Venus in case of women generally indicates aggression mixed with possessiveness when it comes to their love life. Such women usually like to control their love life and they are not comfortable letting go of their partner easily and depending upon the other factors in their horoscope, such women can be very revengeful at times. So be careful in case of women with a retrograde Venus in their horoscope as they can prove to be a one way entry in love life which means that once you get into a relation with these women, it is very difficult to get out of it without facing a big drama. A retrograde Venus usually works very much in the similar way as a straight moving Venus regarding rest of its significations except for the deviations mentioned above.

A retrograde Mercury usually signifies changes with speech abilities, communication skills and decision making abilities.  People with a retrograde Mercury are generally observed to be very introvert or very extrovert which means that they may have a habit of speaking and expressing themselves a lot or they may not express themselves at all. They may also become unpredictable at times due to the effect of retrograde Mercury in their horoscope, as they may not be able to decide what to do and what not to do till the final moment and may make a decision in a state of confusion which makes them look unpredictable. Such people are also seen making some sudden decisions which may surprise other people. So be ready to accept some unpredictable decisions when someone with a retrograde Mercury is around. Apart from these changes, a retrograde Mercury usually shows positive or negative results as decided by the other factors in a horoscope.

And last but not the least, the one planet which actually causes concerns when it goes retrograde is none other than the most feared planet in Vedic astrology, the Saturn itself. This is the only planet which does show negativity when it goes retrograde in a horoscope, even if it is otherwise positive in a horoscope. A retrograde Saturn can show negative effects towards some or in extreme cases towards all of the significances ruled by it in a horoscope, depending upon the other factors present in a horoscope. It can make a person have a high ego, very demanding and over ambitious for material gains among other things. The deadliest effects of Saturn can be seen in a horoscope, if it is negative, retrograde and at the same time placed in Libra which is its sign of exaltation. And even if a positive, retrograde Saturn is placed in Libra, it is capable of producing sufficient negative results to bother the native though it may not be as bad as a negative, retrograde Saturn in Libra. So the natives with a retrograde Saturn in their horoscopes are advised not to wear a Gemstone for Saturn even if it is otherwise very positive or the Lord of the Ascendant itself, because a retrograde Saturn is capable of causing a serious setback at any time even if it is very positive otherwise. So be careful if you have a retrograde Saturn in your horoscope as it can cause mild to serious negative effects depending upon the other factors present in the horoscope even if it is otherwise positive in your horoscope.

To summarize, all retrograde planets except Saturn change some of their characteristics and otherwise keep on working positively or negatively as decided by the other factors in a horoscope, while in case of retrograde Saturn, mild to serious negative effects can be experienced, even if it is otherwise working positive in a horoscope.

Exalted planets are the cause of major misconceptions among the people practicing and interested in astrology. Most of the people interested in astrology and many astrologers believe that the meaning of an Exalted planet in a horoscope is that the planet is strongly positive for the native and is very likely to produce strong positive results regarding the general significances ruled by it, the house it occupies and the aspects it is casting on other planets and houses. For example, an exalted Saturn in Libra is considered very good by many astrologers and it is believed that a person having Saturn placed in Libra in his horoscope is very likely going to be blessed by the good results of Saturn throughout his life. In the same way it is considered that an exalted Sun placed in Aries in a horoscope is a sure indication of very good results which may include securing good posts in government departments and administrative fields among other things.  And similarly all the other planets in their signs of exaltation are considered to be strongly positive and they are associated with strong positive results. But this is just a misconception and the placement of a planet in its sign of exaltation in a horoscope does not imply that the planet is positive in nature. The placement of a planet in its sign of exaltation only indicates that the planet is very strong and the results produced by this planet are going to be very significant ones. But those results may be significantly positive or significantly negative depending upon the nature of the exalted planet in a horoscope. For example an exalted and positive Saturn is capable of producing very strong positive results regarding the significances ruled by it, regarding the house it is placed in and the planets and houses it aspects, while on the other hand there is almost no planet in a horoscope which is as destructive as a negative and exalted Saturn. A negative Saturn placed in Libra can be destructive to extremely destructive and can destroy the significances of the houses and planets aspected by it altogether.  I have personally witnessed many cases where Saturn is exalted and negative in the horoscope and the natives are suffering with great pains and difficulties in different field of their lives depending upon the placement of Saturn in different houses of the horoscope. And the most amazing and upsetting thing is that most of the people suffering heavily due to a negative exalted planet are finding the cause of their miseries and sufferings in some other planet because these people believe that an exalted planet simply means a very strongly positive planet and it is never supposed to cause any harm. And due to this misconception, they are not able to find the planet responsible for their sufferings for very long periods of their lives and sometimes people are not able to find it at all throughout their lives and they just keep guessing about which planet can be the cause of their sufferings and misfortunes. And sometime their misconception about an exalted planet in their horoscope is so strong that they are not willing to believe even an astrologer who tells them that an exalted planet in their horoscope is working negative and is the root cause of most of their problems. Such people refuse to believe the astrologer and look for some other astrologer who can find the cause of their problems with some other planet which is not exalted. And the easiest planets in a horoscope to blame for all the sufferings, misfortunes and problems are debilitated planets.

And talking of debilitated planets again draws attention to one more misconception that prevails strongly among the people interested in astrology and some astrologers. It is generally believed by most of the people and many astrologers that a debilitated planet simply means a negative planet and can only cause problems and sufferings to the native having that debilitated planet in his horoscope. But this is again a misconception and a debilitated planet simply means that it lacks strength and accordingly it may not be able to protect the significances ruled by it in a proper way and so the results produced by such debilitated planet may not be significant ones. But whether those results will be positive or negative has nothing to do with the placement of the planet in its sign of debilitation. The positive or negative results produced by a debilitated planet usually lack the strength and significance which is needed to produce sufficient results. And that is why it is called debilitated or weak. But a debilitated planet can be malefic as well as benefic and it can be even the most benefic planet in a horoscope in spite of being in its sign of debilitation. Talking of which reminds me of one of my clients who is having a strong Dhan Yoga ( a yoga blessing the native with wealth)  in his horoscope which is formed by the most benefic planet in his horoscope which can be considered worst by its sign of placement. This person is having his Venus placed in Virgo which is the sign of debilitation for Venus and to make the matter more interesting, Venus is placed in the 8th house in Virgo. How does that sound. A planet placed in the worst sign and the worst house in a horoscope but still making a strong Dhan Yoga. And this person was told by most of the astrologers he visited that Venus is the most malefic or negative planet in his horoscope and may cause him great problems at any time. This person is having a very beautiful wife, has lead a very luxurious life so far, has traveled at least half of the globe and has made great fortunes during the times when the influence of Venus was very strong. And in fact the most beautiful things of his life have all happened under the influence of Venus. These are all crystal clear indications that Venus is working very positively for this person in spite of being debilitated. But most of the astrologers he visited did not pay any attention to his practical life which was full of gifts given by Venus and Venus alone, and they kept on telling him that Venus is the most malefic planet in his horoscope and he must do remedies to reduce the malefic effect of Venus. This person was also warned by many astrologers that he should never wear the gemstone for Venus throughout his life, otherwise he may suffer serious consequences. Presently this person is my client for a long duration of time and is wearing a Diamond which was the first gemstone that I prescribed for him when he visited me for the very first time. At first this person hesitated in wearing a diamond and told me about many bad things said to him by many astrologers about the bad influence of Venus in his horoscope. But when I explained the strongly positive nature of Venus to him with the help of practical results given by Venus to this person throughout his life, he quickly understood that if all the significances ruled by Venus are producing positive results for him, then how can Venus be negative for him. He got himself a Diamond and wore it straight away to strengthen Venus in his horoscope so that he may benefit from Venus in a more pronounced way. And from the day he wore the diamond, the significances ruled by Venus have all become better and stronger with every passing day.

To summarize, it should be noted that the placement of a planet in its sign of exaltation or in its sign of debilitation is a measure of the strength of the planet, and it should never be mistaken for the functional nature of the planet. Even a debilitated planet can produce great yogas in a horoscope if it is positive in nature while on the other hand an exalted but negative planet can do three times more damage than an average planet.

Wearing gemstones is without any doubt a concept that dates long  back in the history and perhaps no one knows when and where were the first gemstones worn and who wore those gemstones. The only thing we do know is that people have been fascinated by the beauty of gemstones and have worn them. And many of them have worn them even without knowing the good or bad effects that the gemstones may bring to them. I guess they were just charmed by some gemstone and so they wore it. And even to the date there are many people who wear gemstones only because they are attracted or fascinated by some particular gemstone or gemstones. While on the other hand there are many people who wear gemstones to get benefits from them. And when it comes to the benefits given by gemstones, there are so many different concepts regarding which gemstone or gemstones are suitable for a person. There are a number of beliefs, methods and techniques in astrology and every astrologer generally prescribes or recommends a suitable gemstone or the suitable gemstones for his client depending upon the kind of astrology and belief he is practicing in. And as different theories or techniques of astrology use different methods  to prescribe the gemstones, it is quite possible that a person may get different kinds of recommendations from different astrologers depending upon the method of astrology they follow and also upon the extent of knowledge they posses irrespective of the method of astrology they follow. So we’ll just try to find out about some of the concepts and misconceptions practiced by astrologers in prescribing the gemstones.

Let’s start it with the Sun Signs. Many astrologers now a days are prescribing gemstones on the basis of Sun Sign of a person which would mean that all the people born in a particular period of about a month are supposed to wear the same gemstones. And many astrologers pay importance to Sun Signs only even when predicting the nature or luck of a person. Which in my opinion is absolutely wrong because if the Sun Sign alone is to decide everything in the horoscope of a person, then there would be only 12 types of people in this world which is not found in actual practice as there are millions of different kinds of individuals having different natures and different lucks. So this theory does not hold good in my opinion. I’ve been strongly recommending my clients as well as some of my fellow astrologers that they should not pay attention to the Sun Signs alone as there are a number of Signs, Planets and aspects in a horoscope and they result in so many different permutations and combinations which make people different from each other. So in my opinion no predictions should be made from the Sun Signs alone and no gemstones should be prescribed seeing the Sun Signs alone. However this is my personal opinion based on my knowledge and experience and it may or may not be convincing or suitable to everyone.

And there is this concept of wearing the gemstones based on the date of birth alone. According to this concept, all the people born on a particular date, month and year should wear the same gemstones as they are supposed to have the same lucky gemstones which would indicate that they may somehow have the same lucks also. Which again does not sound convincing to me as it would again restrict the number of permutations and combinations which are the backbone of astrology in my opinion. Different persons born on the same dates can be and generally are quite different from each other with different natures and different lucks. So wearing a gemstone based on the date of birth alone does not sound convincing to me. In fact gemstones worn based on such theories can cause great damages to the wearer if they are not suitable according to the horoscope of the person wearing them.

Then there are some astrologers who believe that the safest way to prescribe a gemstone is to find out the Ascendant in the natal chart or horoscope of a person and then prescribe the gemstone belonging to the ruling planet for that Ascendant. For example if the Ascendant in someone’s natal chart or horoscope is Aquarius, then Blue Sapphire is the safest prescription as Aquarius is ruled by Saturn, so Saturn becomes the Lord of Ascendant and the Lord of Ascendant can never bring bad results to the native. Whereas I have personally witnessed many cases where people wearing gemstones based on the above mentioned concept have suffered huge financial, physical and emotional losses after wearing the gemstones. Some astrologers even believe in prescribing the gemstone based on the birth constellation which was rising at the time of birth of a person. Whereas in my opinion, this is again a theory with very limited scope and needs a very little knowledge on the part of the astrologer to assign a gemstone to some person. All you have to do is put the birth details provided by the person in a software and get a horoscope on your screen in matter of seconds, look at the Ascendant or the Constellation and assign the gemstones. And believe me, prescribing a gemstone is not as easy and simple as any of the above mentioned methods make it look. There are a number of aspects and concepts which are to be analyzed properly before predicting anything from a horoscope and before prescribing any gemstones.

And last but not the least, there are some astrologers who believe that gemstones should be worn for the planets which are working negatively in your horoscope and not for the planets which are working positively in your horoscope. They believe that the nature of the planets acting negatively in your horoscope can be changed by wearing gemstones for them. And some of them even go further and say that they have especially charged these gemstones so that they would  transmit only positive radiations to your body even if those planets are working negatively for you. And with due respect to the beliefs of every astrologer, let me tell you one thing that the functional nature of a planet for a person is decided as and when he takes birth and it can not be changed merely by wearing a gemstone for that planet, in my opinion. Gemstones work more in a scientific way and they only transmit the energy of the planet they belong to, into your body, which means that they can only strengthen the energy of a planet  inside your body and accordingly change the strength of the radiations emitted by you. But they are not capable of changing the functional nature of a planet. For example, an Injection of Insulin when injected in a person’s body is only supposed to increase the amount of insulin present in the body of that person. So it should only be used in case of the persons who are suffering from High levels of Blood Sugar. And what would happen if you inject the same amount of insulin in the body of a person who is already suffering from Low Blood Sugar. Well this one is easy, and there are no points for guessing it. So as soon as you wear a gemstone for a planet which is negative for you, its negativity gains strength and starts bothering and troubling  you with even more strength. So it is my strong advice to everyone reading this article that if someone recommends wearing a gemstone saying that this will change the nature of the planet, and the negative planet will start behaving positively, don’t buy this opinion and just find an excuse to leave the place as soon as you can. The effects of negative planets can only be reduced by the use of some special astrological remedies, and the use of gemstones is absolutely prohibited for the planets indicating negative results in your horoscope. So the gemstones are worn only for positive planets and not for the negative planets. And talking about the positive planets, let me tell you one more secret that even a planet working positively in your horoscope is quite capable of giving some side effects. And as you wear the gemstone for this particular planet, you start getting many of its positive results along with some negative ones, which may be different in different cases. For example, if Saturn is working very positively in someone’s horoscope and it is giving good results in the professional life of this person with an added side effect which brings throat problems in the case of this person. Now as this person wears a Blue Sapphire, his professional life will become far better while at the same time, his throat will start giving him more problems. However this phenomenon holds good only in some cases and generally the planets working positively  for a person are capable of giving their good results to the native without any major side effects. And wearing gemstones for such planets would definitely enhance the chances of success in the fields of your life ruled by the lords of the gemstones you are wearing.

Now coming to the end and summarizing the discussion, the gemstones should only be prescribed and worn after a proper analysis of the horoscope and not by looking at just one sign, date or constellation. And the most important thing to remember is that never wear gemstones for the planets working negatively in your horoscope and only wear gemstones for the planets working positively in your horoscope and which are not giving any major side effects.

This is one of the most talked about concepts in Indian astrology. Most of the Indian people believing in astrology fear it and are always concerned whether a Manglik Dosh is formed in their horoscope or not. And then there are some cautions which are attached to this Dosh like some astrologers say that a person having a Manglik Dosh in his or her horoscope should only marry a person who also has Manglik Dosh in his or her horoscope, otherwise the results can be very disastrous which may even include the death of the partner who is not having Manglik Dosh in his or her horoscope. So let’s try to find out, what is this Manglik Dosh, how is a Manglik Dosh formed in a horoscope and what are the possible bad effects of Manglik Dosh.

In Indian astrology it is believed that if Mars is placed in any of the houses 1,2,4,7,8 or 12, in a Horoscope where the rising sign or the Ascendant is assigned the first house, Manglik Dosh is said to be formed in that horoscope. This Dosh is usually said to delay the marriage of the affected person and create disturbances even after marriage or in the worst cases it may cause the death of the spouse. And it is advised by some astrologers that a person having a Manglik Dosh in his or her horoscope should only marry a person who also has Manglik Dosh in his or her horoscope. According to these astrologers, the bad effects of Manglik Dosh present in a horoscope are reduced or even canceled if the person marrying the first person is also having Manglik Dosh in his or her horoscope. As we now know the basic definition of Manglik Dosh, so let’s analyze it further. And for the convenience of foreign readers I would like to mention that any person suffering from Manglik Dosh is called a Manglik. So when someone says “I’m a Manglik”, it simply means that they have Manglik Dosh in their horoscope or at least they’ve been told so. Now let’s move further.

If Manglik Dosh is formed in a way which has been described above, then it is quite evident that 50% of the people should be suffering from the bad effects of this Dosh as the primary condition for the formation of this Dosh is the placement of Mars in the above mentioned six houses of a horoscope counting from the Ascendant. And as there are only 12 houses in a horoscope, so there is a fair chance that every second person in this world should be having Manglik Dosh in his or her horoscope. And accordingly he or she should suffer from the bad effects of this Dosh which may be as bad as the death of the spouse.Doesn’t that sound odd. And if it sounds odd to you, then let me tell you that it sounds odd to me also. I mean how can every second person on the earth can have a Manglik Dosh and if we move one step further, let’s assume that randomly 50% of the people having Manglik Dosh in their horoscope are married to a person having Manglik Dosh in their horoscope and 50% of the people having Manglik Dosh in their horoscope are married to a person not having a Manglik Dosh in their horoscope.
